Ashton McGill’s team had been managing payroll for some of their clients for six years. However, this task soon became a major bottleneck, as staff juggled managing pay runs with looking after their clients. The processes were difficult to remember from month to month, leading to mistakes.
“The monthly payroll period simply caused chaos,” Jared Cordner recalls. “We got to the point where I realised that too many of our people were wearing too many hats.”
From the 23rd of each month, the accountancy team was so consumed by processing payroll that all other tasks, including VAT returns and bookkeeping, were put on hold, causing significant stress.
Jared spent six months attempting to recruit a payroll specialist but found it impossible to create a full-time role that was both cost-efficient and attractive to candidates. “We always needed to find something else for them to do in non-payroll periods,” he explains.
Following a referral from another Your Payroll Manager (YPM) client, Kinder Digital Accountants, Jared contacted Austin Hilton-Ball, YPM’s Founder and CEO.

Jared was clear from the start that Ashton McGill wanted to outsource but only to a UK-based payroll manager rather than an offshore provider or an automated solution. “We’re very customer-centric,” says Jared. “And I’ll admit, we’re a little fussy. We don’t simply want to get payroll over the line each month, at any cost.
